I would like to know what people find as the biggest concern, when planning a trip to the caribbean, because I am a caribbean national and would be glad to answer any questions, comments or queries you may have about the caribbean.

I am planning an anniversay trip around October 1. What areas are less likely to be impacted by tropical storms/hurricanes??

My biggest concern is whether or not the food/water will make me sick. We have been to Cozumel -- was sicker than I've been my entire life. Been to Jamaica twice, once without illness, and once ill for one day. We are going to the Dominican Republic in June, and I want to do all I can to avoid illness.

my biggest fears are (1) crime, (2) feeling like I'm being ripped off (3) feeling like I'm unwelcome. you can generally avoid this if you do enough preparation in time, IMHO .

My biggest concern when planning a trip to the Caribbean is the cost of airfare. There are plenty of good places to stay all over the Caribbean that offer great deals in the off-season, but my airfare usually costs around the same price as one week's stay.

I have no fear for weather or personal safety. I love the sun, certainly, but I also love watching storms blow across the islands and then go out to sea again. I love reading on a balcony with the rain pounding overhead. And I'm much more nervous about my personal safety when I'm traveling domestically than when I'm traveling abroad.

I agree with E. Crowe. Airfare is my biggest concern when traveling to the Caribbean. This is especially true if you like the lesser travelled islands.

We live in the midwest, so what else? Airlines and connections. We have only had flights from GC ever leave on time. (NW Airlines) We've been stranded in other states due to misconnects from delayed and delayed and delayed flights out of the Caribbean. Thanks American Airlines for all that you don't do!

We have only been to the carribean twice, and absolutely love it. As far as getting sick, in Aruba, this proved to be a non issue. Their water comes from the world's second largest de-salinization plant. It's probably better water than you have at home. Just have to watch for normal cleanliness and hygeine with the restaraunt staff. Other places we have stayed, they supplied bottled water and we used it religiously, even for brushing our teethe.

My Dad set me at ease. He has been all over the world. He says, you go in, you look around, look at the servers hands. If they are clean, you'll probably be fine. He's never gone wrong, and so far, neither have we.

My biggest concern is if it will rain or not. Only gotten rained on once and we go to the Caribbean every year (knock on wood). As far as getting sick in the Dominican Republic, the water is what got to me, but that was many years ago (about 12 or 13 yrs ago)so I don't know if it's improved or not. I wasn't extremely ill, just very uncomfortable and had to go to the bathroom alot. I don't even compare Mexico with the rest of the Caribbean as far as that's concerned though. I'm always VERY NERVOUS about eating in Mexico, but I've heard that that the Playa del Carmen area (the nicer all-inclusives there) are safe. We've been to Turks & Caicos, Bahamas, Antigua, St. Lucia, Caymans, Jamaica, St. Kitts, and US Virgin Islands without any problems. St. John is my absolute FAVORITE, but Turks & Caicos are close behind.
