My husband and I are planning a trip to the Caribbean in 2003. We enjoy sandy, uncrowed beaches but would also like to spend some time visiting historial sites and nature parks. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you looked into St. Vincent in the Grenadines?

St. Kitts, with Brimstone Hill and many historical plantations/restaurants. Volcano/rainforest tours, downtown Bassetere area has historical area's.

Belize would be great, you could do an island/mainland split. Spend time in the jungles, visiting caves and ruins and then do your water activities on the island of Ambergris Caye.

Nature and history?

Hands down, it's Dominica-- untouched by time and tourism, it's what Eden must be like. Rushing rivers, tumbling waterfalls, fragrant hibiscus growing wild...

There are colonial churches, a lovely botanical garden, and the only Carib Indian rserve in the Caribbean.

The people are genuinely friendly and the pace is relaxing. I have been all over the Caribbean and Dominica is one of my two favorite islands. (The other is Ambergris Caye, Belize.)

If ever you wanted to spoil yourself with the grace of an amazing island and extremely gracious people go to St Lucia! This island is considered the Helen of the caribbean. This is a place of many plantations, soothing warm waterfalls, lush rainforests and some of the most breathtaking natural harbours in the islands. The worlds only drive in volcano and underwater national park are there. Some of the best snorkling can be done walking right in from the beach in Soufrier where you are overlooked by the spectacular Twin Pitons...these mountains literlly meet the sea. There is also the pidgeon Island nature preserve in the north of St Lucia. It is a very laid back and relaxed Island with very kind people, you won't find the crazy nightlife right under your nose like many of the over touristed islands...it is there, you just have to find it. The locals are carefree and fun loving. They are not over bearing or frightening like in Jamaica. We had many a nice conversation. There is also plenty of history as this island changed hands 14 times between the French and English before it finally declared its independance in 1979. They are also home to 2 noble Laureates...per capita the most in the world! The native language is English which is nice and they use EC currency which is tied at a fixed rate of $2.67EC to $1.00 US. There is no need for currency exchange for the US dollar is readily accepted. Most of the stores you may find yourself in have a key on the register that will automatically calculate what you owe in US money if you let them know that is what you have. I hope this of help...I can tell you we have traveled to many places in the caribbean, this islands grace moved us so much that we are moving there this fall....good luck in your search and enjoy wherever you go!
