We are planning a trip to San Juan the end of Feb. We want to see the phosporescent waters. Is it easier to go to La Parguera or to Vieques?

La Parguera is a 2-2.5 hour drive from San Juan. It's a fishing village with several hotels, houseboats, boat tours, etc. However, because of this development and the resulting pollution, the bay doesn't glow that much anymore. The glowing bay in Vieques is the most pristine and has the highest concentration of glowing plankton in the waters surrounding PR. But, to see it, you have to fly or take the boat to Vieques and overnight there. There are no tours that'll take you from the main island and back in one night. If you don't want to overnight in Vieques, you could try to see the third, lesser-known glowing bay, which is near Las Croabas, Fajardo. It doesn't glow as intensely as Vieques, but it's supposed to be better than La Parguera. I can't vouch for it myself, because I have only visited the La Parguera and Vieques bays. I know of at least one tour operator that does tours of Las Croabas bay: Castillo Tours. You can find contact information for this and other tour operators at www.travelandsports.com.

I went on a cruise at Christmas. My family wanted to see the bioluminescent bays in PR. We went to the bay in Fajardo. No one told us that the single celled animals were in hibernation at this time. We kayaked to the bay. We listened to a 45minute lecture on the bay. We only got to wiggle our hand in the water for a few seconds and kayaked back. Very disappointing. Don't go to the bay during the winter.
