Belize is a peaceful english speaking country in central america, and the people are as warm and friendly as the climate. When venturing out during late hours, call for taxi service to take you to your destination. There are two good places that I would recommend for swimming, snorkeling etc. 1.Caye Caulker 2.Ambergris Caye AS with any other place in the world, take normal precautions when venturing into unknown territory, but for the most part,Belize is a very friendly and safe country.PS-log on to this link to learn more about Belize.www.travelbelize.org

I have never been..BUT close friends of mine have. They were stuck in mud, ordered off the bus by men with semi-automatic rifles and scared half silly. This was supposed to be their 'trip of a lifetime'!!! Not a safe place

We went to Ambergris Cay in 1997. The snorkling is wonderful there. Take a catamaran out to Shark Ray Alley for that. You can check out Caulker Key, as well. But, the mosquitos are fierce there. We also sailed to dinner and had wonderful Stone Crab at resort/restaurant "Capricorn". I don't know if it is still there. I am sure many more resorts have sprouted up in the years since. Check out Placencia, as well. Good luck!

I've been to Belize twice. We visited Caye Caulker, Belize City & San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. I enjoyed Belize very much. I found it to be safe & peaceful. The only negative thing I noticed was that it is expensive. The weather is great, the people are friendly, and snorkeling is the best I've ever experienced. I went in February & October; liked the October visit better because there were fewer tourists and the weather was a little cooler.

I am surprised to see the email about how expensive Ambergris Caye is. It was not so when we were there. However, that was before the "temptation island" thing. We went in 1997. We snorkeled and dived in the HOl Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. We also enjoyed great food in San Pedro, as well as a funky place in Caye Caukler, that was written up in Gourmet magazine. But, I will never forget the night sail, without lights, to and from a great little place that served incredible stone crabs. we sailed in complete darkness.

I recommend anyone thinking of Belize check the State Dept warnings at the link below. Go down to the section marked "CRIME". It's unfortunate that this is happening in such a beautiful land, but poverty does not blend well with wealth. The site mentions:"The incidence of crime, including violent crimes such as armed robbery, shootings, stabbings, murder, and rape, has risen in recent years. Although Belize City is the site of more reported incidents than other areas of the country, crime occurs in all districts, including tourist spots such as San Pedro, Caye Caulker, or Placencia during all times of the day. The Embassy has noted an increase in recent years in reports of crimes against tourists at resorts and on the roadways. The incidence of crimes such as theft, burglary, purse snatching and pick-pocketing rises around the winter holidays and spring break. Several victims who resisted when confronted by criminals have received serious personal injuries, including gunshot wounds." Here is the full link: http://www.travel.state.gov/belize.html

Belize is a beautiful place. Stay off the roads at night and have a guide when entering the city..We were held at gun point by bandits after entering Guatemala (on the Southwest Hwy) to visit Tikal.Would recommend flying into Guatamala City and then traveling to the Mayan ruins. Its a different country and Americans need to be aware. But a must to see! ENJOY!!

Does anyone know if Belize- Ambergris Caye in particular, has gotten safer with the curfew that was imposed and other police measures over the past months?

My husband and I stayed in Ambergris Caye in Feb 2003. The people on the island are very nice.
The no-seeums are killers. My husband was eaten alive. There are great tours to go on..loved the Lamanai Jungle/Mayan Ruins tour with Daniel. Alfonso is a great snorkeling guide if you want to see Shark Ray Alley--all we saw were lots of sting rays. The food is either expensive or cheap--not much in between...we did not care for the food overall. Sorry. Our hotel did have a fabulous restaurant though thankfully..although a bit pricey. The one thing that we did not care for about the beach was the seagrass. It lined the beach. It was raked up occationally and left on big piles on the beach.. left quite an odor. We felt safe, but did not do a lot of nightlife other than dinner and drinks. Have a great trip.
