Is it a good idea to buy excursions on Cruise Ships. They seem so high priced and I can't help wondering about the mark up. Can one just just get off the ship and walk up and pay at most of these excursions? We are maining interested in skorkeling trips. Thanks, Chris

With a little research you can do better on your own for some. Others are unique to cruise lines Example snorkeling you may do better getting one on your own as we did on the Caymans. Our family chartered boat for a day and paid much less and had a nice private day.

They are expensive but sometimes unique and cheaper than going on your own by taxi. Before you go, get a guide book or read issues of CT&L for ideas on places worth seeing on the islands you'll visit. Things like beaches, snorkeling and such can usually be done cheaper on your own if you read up first. Some unique things like yacht racing or the butterfly farm on St Martin are only available or cheaper as an excursion. Others, like going to the Atlantis Hotel while in Nassau are very steep for what you get. So you don't feel pressured, read about the islands before you go.
