We are planning a trip to the Carribbean in late July. The only place we've been to is Aruba and loved it, but we would like to try another island. Any recommendations on a family friendly place with white sandy beaches would be greatly appreciated!

If you want peace & serenity with great beaches and restaurants, I would recommend St. John in USVI or Turks & Caicos...you can't go wrong with either. We are going to Anguilla in May and I've heard fantastic things about that island. We will be spending a couple of nights in St. Martin, but here it's more touristy.

Denise,
I just realized that you mentioned a family friendly place. All of the islands I mentioned are friendly, but St. John is more targeted for romance, honeymooners...that sort of thing. There is a "Beaches" resort in Turks & Caicos, but you'd have to like being around tons and tons of kids because there is an abundance there...but they have lots of kids activities.

Thanks Tina. Has anyone been to either St. Johns or Turks and Caicos in July?

Denise: Every year we go to the caribbean in July/August. Have been to the Turks and loved it! We stayed at the Allegro Resort and my kids were occupied all day and half the night. It was certainly a trip they will never forget. St.Croix was ok but nothing for children. The Lucayan in Freeport was great also. Enjoy your trip!

We have gone to Sint Maarten/St. Martin several times in July. Aside from the time we missed a hurricane by only a few days, we have enjoyed it very much! Of course, Aruba does have that nice wind to help cool things down...

We have been to St. John twice and it's incredible. Don't forget that 70% of the island is a national park, including all of the pristine beaches and hiking trails. If your kids love the water, there are 10 different beaches to choose from with great snorkeling and safe swimming. Most of the accomodations are rental homes with full kitchens which is also great for kids that are finicky eaters.

We have been to the Turks and Caicos in the summer (end of July last year) and stayed at the Turks and Caicos Club (our first time.) The island is quiet, but you can get reservations anywhere, dive boats aren't crowded and the rates are good. The weather is humid, but a nice breeze comes through.

Thanks everyone. We have decided on St. John. Any recommendations on villas or hotels there?

Being a land owner I am particularly partial to St. John in the USVI. However, though the hotels, (Westin, Caneel) are more geared to honeymooners and such, there are some other great opportunities. There are many villas and apartments for rent where you can live the island life in the comfort of your own efficiency. There are eco-friendly houses for rent at Maho Bay and "campsite" accomodations at Maho and Cinnamon Bays. So the prices and amenities vary. Besides the beaches being amazing... their are hiking trails and other activities for nature lovers. Nightlife is a bit more laid back in some places, but nicer clubs with jazz or other music can also be found and the prices will vary according to how clean the floor is after a shower. Another great island with many all inclusives, and a lot of things to do if you travel around a bit, is Barbados. The people are great in both places and they are safe and friendly. I could go on and on about these two favorite islands, but I think you catch my drift. Enjoy!

I've had great success talking to Karin at www.vivavactions.com for places to stay on St. John. Tell her Mark sent you!

Stay away from BEACHES resorts! It is kid central and not an island experience at all, except for the beach. Way too them parkish. Otherwise, the rest of the choices are good. As for St. Martin. I am a regular there. I go to small hotels away from Orient Beach and the Dutch side where it's less touristy and relaxing. We love Grand Case for the food and Anguilla (which we have also been to) is just a quick ferry away. Now, that there are night ferries, you can even go for dinner!

Like Tina, I realised that you wanted a family friendly place. Actually, there are many more other than the typical all-inclusive theme park places. If that's what you want then you will enjoy it. The Marriott in St. Kitt's which is a new resort will cater to the entire family.
