Anyone know where to go for surfing? What are the conditions like, how are the locals? Is there anywhere to go that is close to the resorts in either Puerto Plata or Punto Cana? If possible I would love to find walking distance. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email me at ljklassen@mts.net - thanks alot!

Hey Larry,

I don't know if they still publish it or not, but pcik up a copy of Surfer Magazine (or call them) to purchase a copy of the "Surf Report" for the Dominican Rep/Caribbean.

If you're choosing between Punta Cana & Puerto Plata, definitely choose the latter. Anywhere along the northern, Atlantic coast has surfing potential, but around Cabarete is known for it's winds, wake...and, as the windsurfing capital of the Caribbean.

As for the locals, I consider them some of the most beautiful, intriguing people ever created! They're beyond hospitable. Speaking Spanish will definitely enrich your experience, but most Dominicans remotely involved within the tourism have picked up several international languages. Their payscales are determined by their abilities to speak in other languages.

But remember: There needs no interpreting of a warm smile. ENJOY!
