I am planning a surprise vacation for Winter Break for my sons, ages 7 and 11. I would like to keep expenses down, but keep them busy at the same time. I am on the East Coast and would prefer a relatively short flight from Florida. Any information you can offer would be appeciated.

We went there last year, and stayed at the Windham Viva Maya and had a ball. We got friendly with a single mom there with 2 sons (What a coincidence!) Currently, it is on sale in the Boston area for $799 plus the various taxes they assess, which is about a hundred cheaper than we did last year. This is an all inclusive place, as much of the Mayan Riviera is. It is also one of the more inclusive all inclusives I have been to. There is sailing, boogie boards, snorkel gear, biking, archery, tennis (too hot for that), excellent nightly shows, fantastic kids clubs, daily group activities, and much more. A very safe place to visit, it is nestled in a gated community. There is a shopping mall across the street that has a bunch of tourist shops that will let you browse without hassling you, with very good prices, and a convenience/drug store also. Pictures to commemorate your trip will cost only $7.00 a copy from the various folks walking around with macaws and monkeys. The food is typical all inclusive, plenty to eat and plenty of variety, so you will always have something to eat, even if it is not world class gormet dining. Walk up punch drink servers and ice cream dispensers, snacks all day. The rooms are fairly good, AC, full bath, beds and TV, daily cleaning. Cancun is nearby for the teens, and there are bus trips there, as well as opportunities to visit huge Mayan ruins, or snorkel in Cozumel, right across the water. This was a fun, fun, fun place to visit, and a great place to bring the kids, and budget minded also. This is the place we'd love to bring our kids and grandkids to, if we could ever get everyone together on it!
