We are trying to plan a short trip w/out the kids. We want someplace that will have us on the beach by noon, safe enough to experience the local flavor of the island, and close to a laid back bar playing reggae or steel drums until at least midnight. Any suggestions?

It depends on where you live in the U.S., how much you want to spend and the activities you enjoy. Right off the bat the islands that come to mind as being very accessible to the East Coast are: Antigua, St. Lucia, Grenada (needs to be rebound from hurricane though), St. John, St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Jamaica, Tobago. With a bit more information I might be able to help you more. We've traveled through much of the Caribbean and I was born there. Feel free to email me with specific questions.

Hello Jandklumley! If I were you I would go to Anguilla. I just love that island because it is not so "touristy" and it is a very friendly place. My best suggestion as to where to stay would be ALLAMANDA BEACH CLUB. Threy have an awesome out door reggea bar and also there are other places close by with reggae music until late. The Allamanda sits righht on what I think is the best beach in Anguilla.Another island for you I would say would be St. John. Make sure you go to Hawksnest Beach.
