Is there any inexpensive way to get from the mainland to St. Croix? Freighter? Off-the-wall airline? Circuitous route? I would be willing to tie myself to a log and float if I thought that would work!

I would suggest finding another destination other than any of the USVI. I was there on St John in "Love City" this summer as a tourist and my son was murdered. Yes it is true. The crime rate is worse than any of the United States. Out of 183 reported crimes + on St. John to date this year 3 have been solved. St Croix is more dangerous than St. John and St. Thomas is the WORST place I have ever been.
I am trying to save your life, please listen.:(

The problem with getting to any of the Caribbean is the limited number of airlines that go there and that this results in less competitive pricing. However, if you can book way ahead, you can get to St Thomas for approximately $300 r/t. From there, you can take a ferry for $90 round trip to St Croix. The ferries are only Fri-Mon, twice a day and a 90 minute ride. Riding on a log can be too dependant on currents and then what will you have to wear.
(p.s. I am fully aware of your plight Ms. Cockayne and how poorly it was handled, and much of the story around the sad incident. I mean no disrespect and only wish you as much healing as the Lord can possibly give you.)
