Good news..of a sort. After pressure from the duty free shops and tourism associations fell on deaf ears, the government of the US Virgin Islands has gotten American Airlines to allow boxes of duty free to be checked on baord, without being counted as a suitcase you must pay $15-$25 for. The other checked baggage rules still apply.

Now here's the trick...get a hold of one of those duty free booze boxes and load as much as you can of your stuff and make that your 2nd suitcase. Well, in theory it's a good trick, but most checked duty free is opened and retaped to assure that there's nothing else in there, and no overproof rum (Highly flammable). Oh well.

The bad news is that American and Continental have reduced flights into the islands aking them scarcer and when something is scarce, what happens to it gang? The price goes up.
