Hotels on Riviera Maya

We're planning a week-long trip to the Riviera Maya and are looking for hotel ideas. Ideally, we'd like something between Playa del Carmen and Tulum that offers a relaxed atmosphere, affordability, good food, and proximity to the beaches and Mayan ruins. Don't want a big busy hotel, but want a great experience. Has anyone found any gems in that area?

I highly recommend The Riu Palace. We went there for our honeymoon. We travel the caribbean frequently and I would say this is one of our favorite places. It is definately our favorite in Mexico and we have been there several times also. Service was excellent and the beach is beautiful.
