Has anyone rented a car in Mexico? We don't want to rent at the airport (Cancun) but would like to rent one for a few days once we get to the resort (Grand Palladium). Anyone with suggestions?

Renting a car or jeep is as easy as it is in the U.S. Just check with the hotel. It shouldn't be a problem. Check road conditions, but many are modern and in great shape. You also probably need to get the insurance. j

We've rented cars 2 times in Cancun and 1 time in Cabo San Lucas/San Jose Del Cabo. In Cancun, we rented the car directly from our resort's travel services center as it was only for a couple of days. In Cabo, we made our own arrangements and used a rental facility across the street from the airport. Each time, we had no problems with either picking the car up or dropping off. Common sense - before you drive it off the lot and again when you return it, make sure a rental rep. notes any damages (i.e. scratches, indentations, lights out, etc.). Write down any damages on the rental agreement before you take it off the lot and have the rep. initial anything you've written, so there are no surprises when you get home and see extra charges on your credit card. Then it's your word against theirs. MOST DEFINITELY GET THE INSURANCE COVERAGE EVEN IF YOUR CREDIT CARD HAS THE IDENTICAL COVERAGE!!! Mexico takes motor vehicle accidents very seriously. From what I've read, if this coverage is waived and you're in an accident it's jail first and then good luck. The roads are in good shape and we never had any problems with "banditoes" on the road. Their term, not mine. Good luck, have fun!!! Mexico is an awesome country from our experiences going to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, and Cancun 3 times! I envy you!!!! :)

We rented a car in Cozumel from the Hertz deal in town so we could drive around the island and go to the Mayan Ruins by ourselves. We had no problems, but MAKE SURE YOU GET THE INSURANCE, no matter what anyone else advises you. You are still in a foreign country and if you do have a minor mishap, you will be covered under "Mexican Laws". It is definitely worth the extra bucks for peace of mind.
